Chimney Cap Installation in Dallas: Typical price $499 – $1,100
A chimney cap is the metal hood and mesh that sits on top of your flue. It looks like a small part, but it is the first line of defense for everything below it.
A good cap does four jobs at once. It keeps rain from pouring straight down the flue, where it rusts dampers, soaks the smoke chamber and stains the firebox. It keeps birds, squirrels and raccoons from nesting in the flue. Its mesh works as a spark arrestor, stopping embers from landing on your roof or your neighbor’s. And its hood helps stop downdrafts on windy days, so smoke goes up instead of back into the room.
Without a cap, an open flue collects leaves, nests and water every season. Most of the animal removals and many of the leak calls we run in Dallas start with a missing or broken cap. If an animal is already inside, see our bird nest and animal removal service first.
DFW weather is hard on chimney hardware. Hail dents hoods and tears mesh. Spring storms push sideways rain under undersized hoods. Summer heat on a dark roof cycles the metal every day, which loosens screws and cracks the caulk that holds a cap to the flue tile.
Material matters here. Galvanized steel caps are the cheapest, but in our climate they usually start to rust within a few years and leave orange streaks down the brick. Stainless steel caps cost more up front and last far longer. Copper caps are the premium option for homeowners who want the look.
Fit matters just as much. A cap that is too small sits loose and blows off in the next storm. A cap with the wrong mesh size either lets animals through or clogs with soot and creosote, which can choke the draft of a wood fireplace.
Most cap calls fall into a handful of situations. The original builder-grade cap has rusted through and the mesh has holes big enough for birds. A storm has bent the hood or knocked the cap off the flue entirely. A previous installer used the wrong size and the cap rattles in the wind. Or the house never had a cap at all.
Multi-flue chimneys, common on larger Dallas homes, need a different solution. One cap per flue can look cluttered and leave gaps, so we often recommend a single custom cap that covers the whole crown. Chimneys with siding chases usually need the cap and the chase cover looked at together, because a rusted chase cover leaks no matter how good the cap is.
If the crown under the cap is cracked, a new cap alone will not stop water. In that case we quote crown repair alongside the cap so you only pay for one trip to the roof.
We also see caps that were installed directly over the crown without a proper seal, so water still runs down the outside of the flue tile into the chimney. A correct installation seals the base or uses a cap designed to sit on the flue tile, not just rest on top of it.
Standard single-flue caps fit one round or square clay flue tile. They are the right choice for most single-fireplace homes and are usually installed the same visit.
Custom caps are fabricated to the exact size of your crown. They cover multiple flues, suit chimneys with unusual dimensions, and give the cleanest finish on high-end homes.
Lock-top caps combine a cap with a top-sealing damper. A cable runs down to the firebox, so you open the lid when you light a fire and close it tight when you don’t. They seal far better than an old throat damper and cut heating and cooling loss up the flue. See our damper repair page if your existing damper is the problem.
Already bought a cap? We can install a customer-provided cap or restore and re-secure the one you have.
We start on the roof, not in the living room.
The technician measures every flue opening, checks the crown, the flue tile and the condition of any existing cap, and looks for signs of animals or water already inside the flue. Mesh size is matched to how you use the fireplace.
You get the cap size, the options that fit your chimney and a fixed price before any work starts.
Old or damaged hardware is removed first.
A standard cap is fitted to the flue tile and fastened with stainless hardware long enough to bite properly, or with clamp-style mounts on taller chimneys that take the full force of spring storms. Where the old cap was caulked to the tile, the old caulk is cleaned off and fresh high-temperature sealant is applied.
Custom and multi-flue caps are measured on the first visit, fabricated to the exact size of your crown and installed on a return visit. Lock-top dampers are installed with the cable run down to the firebox and tested from inside.
Before the crew leaves, the cap gets a final check.
The hood is tight, the mesh is clear and the fireplace drafts properly with the damper open. We photograph the finished cap from the roof so you can see exactly what was installed.

Yes. An uncapped flue lets in rain, animals and debris, and lets embers escape onto the roof. Most animal removals and many leak calls we see start with a missing cap.
Stainless steel. Galvanized caps cost less but usually rust within a few years in Texas weather and stain the brick. Stainless lasts far longer.
Mesh size is the detail most people never think about. Standard caps use a 3/4 inch mesh that keeps out birds and most animals while still letting soot pass. Finer mesh catches more embers but clogs faster on wood-burning fireplaces, so we match the mesh to how you actually use the fireplace. Gas log fireplaces and wood fireplaces burned every winter weekend do not need the same cap.
Wind is the other Dallas factor. Our spring storms regularly bring gusts that will lift a cap held on by a few short screws, especially on taller two-story chimneys. We fasten caps with stainless hardware long enough to bite into the flue tile or use clamp-style mounts, and we check that the hood sits low enough to stop sideways rain without restricting the draft.
Yes. We install customer-provided caps and can restore or re-secure an existing cap that is still in good shape.
A standard cap is usually installed in under an hour once we are on the roof. Custom caps are measured first and installed when fabrication is complete.
It stops rain entering the flue. If water is coming through a cracked crown, the brick or the flashing, those need to be fixed too. We check all of them during the visit.
A correctly sized cap with the right mesh does not. Undersized hoods and clogged fine mesh can, which is why we size the cap to the flue and the way you use the fireplace.
A stainless steel cap usually lasts many years. Galvanized caps often need replacing within a few years in Texas. We check yours at every inspection.
Factory-built fireplaces use caps made for that specific pipe. We replace those too and check the chase cover at the same time.
